SHERBURNE, N.Y. (WBNG) — Chenango County fire investigators say they do not suspect foul play in a blaze that tore through a car dealership in Sherburne.
The fire at Crandall’s Used Cars, located at 536 Blanding Road, was reported at 8:42 p.m. Tuesday.
“I was home,” said Crandall’s Used Cars owner David Crandall. I got the call to come down. There was nothing that I could do. Fire departments were here and couldn’t get near the building.”
Some of his family members were there by his side when chaos took over.
“Fire and smoke and watching everything that my husband’s grandfather built burn to the ground,” said Kristen Crandall of Norwich.
Sherburne Fire Chief Jansen Casscles told 12 News Wednesday that investigators have not tracked down exactly what sparked the fire, but said it started in the middle of the building.
“The crews that responded performed extremely well to keep the fire out of the house that’s fifteen feet behind the building of origin,” said Casscles. “In fact that house is facing no damage at all. I mean that speaks volumes for how well they worked last night.”
Casscles said no one was inside at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
“Just terrible,” explained Crandall. “I’ve been here for 32 years.”
Crandall says a customer’s vehicle was inside the building. He said if insurance doesn’t cover it, he plans to pay for the vehicle out of his own pocket.
“Hopefully we get enough of the insurance, rebuild, and keep going,” added Crandall.
Fire officials say the building is a total loss. Chenango County Fire investigators are leading the investigation.
