VESTAL (WBNG) – Senior outfielder Jessica Rutherford collected two hits, a run scored and a RBI and freshman outfielder Lauren Martinez smacked her second home run of the season to lead the Binghamton University softball to victory against Maine in the first round of the America East tournament Wednesday morning at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Rutherford singled to lead off the game and later scored on a fielder’s choice. In the fourth inning, Sara Herskowitz scored on a sacrifice fly from Rutherford to put Binghamton up, 2-0. Martinez added an insurance run in the sixth with her solo home run.
Rayn Gibson threw a complete game, allowing one run on six hits and five walks, to earn her seventh victory of the season.
Binghamton University softball head coach Michelle Johnston on Rutherford setting the table at the top of the order:
"We had Jess in the middle of our lineup during the beginning, middle part of the year, we decided to make that change," said Johnston. "She just sets the tone early and we felt like she was really doing a good job in the leadoff spot, and I think it’s helping us get momentum coming into games."
Final score: No. 5 Binghamton – 3, No. 4 Maine – 1
The Bearcats advance to the winner’s bracket semifinal Thursday morning at 11 a.m. against top-seeded Albany.
