Makenzie Stiles – 12 Sports Athlete of the Week

DEPOSIT (WBNG) — The Deposit softball team has won three consecutive Class D New York State softball championships, and with junior pitcher Makenzie Stiles in the circle, the Lady Jacks could very well claim a fourth straight title.

"Mackenzie [Stiles] again in the circle [on Saturday], she was dominant," Deposit softball head coach Dan Briggs said.

Stiles tossed a perfect game to lead the Lady Jacks to a fifth straight Class D crown.

"Just keep that defense we’ve been having," said Briggs. "As long as we have Stiles in the circle, I know she’s going to keep us in the game."

Saturday was not the first time Stiles has been untouchable.

Just this season, the junior has pitched four perfect games. She’s tossed 13 total in her high school career.

"This one was pretty special," said Stiles. "We had some new girls on the team, and I couldn’t have done it without any single one of them. We’re going to take this as more motivation and keep this adrenaline going and hopefully continue to the state title."

Briggs says Stiles makes his life a little easier.

"It’s a bit of a relief, believe it or not," said Briggs. "I can sit on the bucket and know that I have her in the circle throwing strikes, she’s dealing, throwing hard."

And the University of Pittsburgh commit is even better when she’s put on the big stage.

"That’s when [Stiles] steps it up even more, when there’s runners on and pressure on her," Briggs added.

As a sophomore, Stiles threw a perfect game in the state semifinals.

Despite the spotlight always being on her, the junior says she cannot do it without her defense.

"I can’t thank my team enough for it, they’ve really helped me through it," Stiles said.

The Lady Jacks handled Marathon in Saturday’s section championship, 22-0.

"I think we’re having some great at-bats, we have been for half the season or more now," Briggs said.

No. 1 Deposit faces No. 19 Eldred in the Class D New York State regionals Friday, June 1 at 5:30 p.m. at Union-Endicott High School.
