HARPERSFIELD, N.Y. (WBNG) — A complaint from neighbors about animals being neglected promoted an investigation in Delaware County.
According to Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond, deputies responded to 746 Gaffey Road in Harpersfield on June 17.
While there, they allegedly found three horses and one miniature donkey that were malnourished. According to Sheriff DuMond, the animals had not been taken care of in several days, possibly weeks.
"It angers me as sheriff to see animals victimized this way. Much like our children and our elderly, when people victimize an animal it’s just totally unacceptable," Sheriff DuMond told 12 News on Wednesday.
The sheriff’s office says 46-year-old Eric Palmatier, 24-year-old Francis Thomas, 20-year-old Amanda Thomas and 19-year-old Erica Palmatier, all of Harpersfield, were charged with failure to provide proper food and drink to animals and failure to provide proper sustenance to animals.
Authorities say Eric Palmatier was also charged with the misdemeanor of criminal nuisance in the second degree for failing to keep his horse out of the roadway.
All four were issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Harpersfield Court on a later date.
Sheriff DuMond says the animals are now in the care of a sanctuary and a neighbor, except for one horse that had to be euthanized.
