17th Jim ‘Mudcat’ Grant golf tournament tees off Thursday

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Baseball celebrities are making their way to the Southern Tier for the 17th annual Jim "Mudcat" Grant All-Star Golf Tournament.

The event was established in 2002 by Security Mutual Life, the Broome County Urban League, and Jim “Mudcat” Grant along with his fellow members of The Black Aces, the African-American major league baseball pitchers who have won 20 or more games in a single season.

This year’s tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Links at Hiawatha in Apalachin.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Broome County Urban League, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Binghamton, Catholic Charities, and the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW).

"We don’t always get the extra funds that we need. So to be a part of this, and to know at the end of the day, we’re going to get some money that’s going to help us enhance our programs, improve on them and add some more. It’s wonderful," explained MaryBeth Smith, the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Binghamton.
