VESTAL (WBNG) – Matt Thrasher has been a stud on the Vestal lacrosse team for a couple of years, now as a senior, he’s showing out on the gridiron in a big way. Thrasher’s huge game Friday night earned the Golden Bear 12 Sports’ Athlete of the Week award.
"I would go on record and say it was one of the greatest games ever played on that field for our Vestal team," said Vestal head coach Tony Policare III.
On Friday night the Vestal Den was rocking for Vestal’s home opener and Matt Thrasher put on a show. The running back ran for 256 yards with four touchdowns. He also picked off two passes on defense. The highlight of his offensive output was an 85-yard touchdown run where Thrasher almost went untouched.
"I will give my lineman all the credit they did an amazing job," said Vestal senior running back Matt Thrasher. "Every good run is because of them. That one was amazing, the whole was gaping and they just crushed it. I mean my center knocked a kid out on that play."
Vestal welcomed a East Syracuse-Minoa team to town that had averaged more than 30 points a game during the first two weeks of the season. Thrasher was covering a receiver who caught two touchdown passes the week before, but on Friday Thrasher did not allow him to catch a single pass.
"I just saw them coming up, I saw the ball and I did what I had to do," said Thrasher. "I caught it and made sure I got my feet in bounds, and just made a big play."
For a guy who dominates both sides of the field, Thrasher says he enjoys the touchdowns a bit more than the interceptions.
"I love getting into the endzone and hearing the crowd scream," said Thrasher. "It is a great feeling. I loved doing that more than interceptions, but yes interceptions are great too."
