OWEGO (WBNG) — The Rebecca Weitsman Memorials Dog Park in Owego is temporarily closed due to recent flood damage, leaving playful pups, disappointed.
The dog park is part of Hickories Park. Park officials said the fence surrounding the dog park sustained severe damage from flooding about a month ago. Tuesday’s flooding only made it worse.
Many people drove their cars to the bridge leading to the dog park, but quickly learned the entire road was blocked off.
Some people, like John Lorang and his dog CeCe, had to make do without the park.
“I’ll probably just take her for a little bit of a walk today, so she gets some exercise,” Lorang said.
Lorang said he enjoys the dog park because it lets CeCe run around, without straining his health.
“My big thing is, I make a loop around the big dog park, but there’s benches periodically and I stop, relieve my pain,” Lorang said.
People who don’t own dogs, said they see at least five or six dogs enjoying the park at any given moment.
“I don’t own a dog. I have cats, but when I come and walk, I always go over there and watch them playing together,” Karen Herrala said.
Park officials said they have a contractor lined up to fix the fence. It is unclear how much longer the dog park will be closed.
