TOWANDA, Pa (WBNG) — Teams from across the Northeast met in Towanda, Pennsylvania on Thursday to compete in the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500, with a spot in the national finals on the line.
The bricklaying competition featured ten teams from all over Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York and other states in the region. The goal of the competition was to build the best wall possible with 500 bricks.
Event organizers said while the event may appear to be organized chaos, there is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into the competition.
“It takes a lot of craftmanship. A lot of these guys, they’ve been around the industry a long time. For them to come out and actually show their talent and compete, for some guys they wait for this their whole life,” said Rob DePhillips, a regional salesman for Spec Mix, the company sponsoring the event.
The teams don’t just compete for bragging rights either. The winners of Thursday’s event, a father-son duo from New Jersey, took home a thousand dollars, but the bigger prize was an expenses-paid trip to Vegas, where they will compete against the other regional winners to determine the best bricklayers in the country.
