WBNG’s Harvest for Hunger Phone Bank raises thousands for Catholic Charities

JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) –Thanks to support from our community, 12 News was able to raise $14,745 during the Harvest for Hunger Phone Bank for Catholic Charities of Broome County.

The phone bank took place on Wednesday and Thursday evening during our 5-6:30 p.m. broadcasts. All donations will directly benefit Catholic Charities’ food pantry.

Mary Whitcombe, manager of emergency services at Catholic Charities, said the pantry serves about 5,000 people per month.

“Our food pantry is very unique in Broome County because it’s open everyday and you don’t need a referral to come to it like some of the other pantries in the area. We have to be prepared everyday to have food on hand and I think that’s something people aren’t aware of,” Whitcombe said.

Whitcombe also said she thinks not many are aware of the need in our area.

“I think people forget that a lot of families in Broome County are one paycheck away from having a crisis and not able to put food on the table,” Whitcombe said.

If you didn’t get the chance to make a pledge during our phone bank, it’s not too late to help Catholic Charities. Wegmans will be accepting donations at its Johnson City location all month long.
