Belva Lockwood Inn set to open January 1 in Owego

OWEGO (WBNG) — The Belva Lockwood Inn has pieces of the past to preserve its rich history.

“It’s truly been one of those things that as we did it, we started to really see how wonderful of a home this is,” said Belva Lockwood Inn owner Ike Lovelass.

Ike and his wife Julie both own the inn and the Owego Kitchen.

The inn features five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a dining space, a kitchen and a living room.

“The community has been unbelievably supportive, we get so much positive feedback from people and just thanks in general which kind of restores your faith in humanity,” explained Ike.

The couple has been working since last December to bring the inn back to life.

“For the most part we’re done,” said Julie. “We’ve got at least one of the guest rooms that probably have about another week to finish up, but everything else is ready to go.”

It’s set to officially open to the public January 1.

“It’s not a big grand hotel that can fit thousands of people,” added Julie. “It’s a very small, intimate space where you really get to enjoy your company and we have a full-time chef who is spectacular.”

The inn is named after Belva Lockwood. She was the head of an all-girls school on the same property in the 1800s.

Her name would also go down in history as the first woman to run for president of the United States.

“We’ve got people who just stop by, bring us their grandmother’s China, bring us mirrors, and pictures and blankets, and things that they want, people truly want to be a part of this project,” explained Julie.
