2:50 P.M. FRIDAY UPDATE:
JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WBNG) — A power outage in Johnson City Thursday night was caused by a defective switch and loose connection at a location on Grand Boulevard, according to NYSEG.
The utility company says all of the highway salt being spread on the roadway and on equipment at that location most likely caused the outage.
“Salt deposited on our facilities can cause electric system problems,” a NYSEG official said in an email to 12 News.
NYSEG says this is also believed to be what caused the flickering lights on Riverside Drive.
More than 1,700 customers were without electricity for approximately three hours amid dangerously cold temperatures.
Power was restored around 11:15 p.m. Thursday.
