Olympic gold medalist Benoit Samuelson: ‘Believe in what you’re doing’

VESTAL (WBNG) — Olympic Gold Medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson was Binghamton University’s featured speaker for its Celebrating Women’s Athletics Luncheon on Monday. Benoit Samuelson won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1984 games in Los Angeles.

It wasn’t an easy path for Benoit Samuelson to achieve her deams as a young woman in sports. Title IX didn’t come around until she was already in high school, but the Olympic gold medalist told 12 Sports, it’s all about going after what you want in life.

“I had dreams and aspirations and I had people along the way who would help me achieve those dreams and aspirations,” said Joan Benoit Samuelson. “Never say never. I just think it’s important to believe in what you’re doing, and to have that passion, and to lead a balanced and full life.”

An event-record 780 were in attendance for this year’s luncheon.
