BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — February has arrived, officially marking the start of American Heart Month. In celebration of this, Security Mutual Life Insurance will light the Security Mutual building red to spread a life-saving message.
The American Heart Association, Lourdes and the city of Binghamton are also teaming up in the “Go Red For Women initiative” to raise awareness for women’s heart health. Heart disease is currently the number one cause of death among women here in Broome County, as well as nation-wide.
“What we’re really trying to do is encourage people to see red, see a heart and think about themselves. Think about the women that they love, the people in their life that they can help educate,” said American Heart Association Regional Director Gina Chapman.
The American Heart Association says it’s important to be aware of early warning signs, and also to have a healthy diet, exercise regularly and to avoid smoking.
