Chenango Valley Middle schoolers learn physics and math through handmade boat race

TOWN OF FENTON (WBNG) — One local middle school put their students’ creative minds to the test through an annual friendly competition.

Chenango Valley middle schoolers raced across the school pool in their handmade boats on Thursday evening.

Dozens of teams constructed their own boats out of cardboard and duct tape.

While some boats took victory in speed and buoyancy, others stood out in creative design.

It’s a practical application of math and physics to see which boats were successful and what needs adjusting for next year’s race.

“I was gonna say make the walls bigger and make both ends pointed so then you don’t have to turn it and you can just turn your body around and then steer,” says Natalie Turner, one of the boat designers.

This was the 9th year Chenango Valley has held the boat race.
