Girl Scout cookies to help local nonprofit

(WBNG) — Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways has partnered up with the Rescue Mission Alliance to help make a difference with its yummy cookies.

It’s a nonprofit organization that provides programs to end hunger and homelessness across New York.

This collaboration will help the Binghamton Rescue Mission.

“People come in broken, afraid, hopeless, and what we do here helps to in a sense put them back together and help them move forward in their lives,” said Binghamton Rescue Mission Program Manager Diane Tolentino.

Organizers say helping the local nonprofit is simple.

“When the girls are out and about selling cookies, customers generously donate a box so they pay the troop and then we send all those donated boxes of cookies to our partner,” said Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways Senior Director of Sales Andrea Mastronardi.

Those donated cookie boxes will be given out as dessert for the mission during meals in parts of the state, including Binghamton.

“Not only does it support the rescue mission but it also supports Girl Scouts because they get to keep the proceeds for their troop account and like I said the girls are learning some really great values through it,” explained Mastronardi.

The Rescue Mission says every little bit helps.

“Providing all these services, transportation, case manager, staff, meals, it certainly adds up,” said Tolentino.

Tolentino says this effort can go a long way.

“In order to sustain the program and keep the program going we need the income and the support of the community and so the Girl Scouts provide that,” added Tolentino.

Each cookie donation can make a difference.

“It’s a very exciting feeling of course just to give back to our community that has been so supportive of us,” said Mastronardi.
