ELMIRA (WENY/WBNG) — Hundreds of people from across the Southern Tier gathered in Eldridge park in Elmira Sunday morning in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest human shamrock.
Organizers say more than 1,200 people dressed in green to attend the event, a turnout that shocked the community.
“When I brought this idea to them, I didn’t see it happening right away but the wheels just got in motion and once everything started it all really just came together, they really liked the idea. It got so many likes and shares on social media, just everyone in this area just really came out and it’s just amazing. I’m so impressed by the turnout today,” says Anthony Chiavaroli, a human shamrock organizer.
The current record is only 851 people, set in Dublin, Ireland.
The group is waiting for the official ruling by the Guinness World Record.
Organizers say they plan to make the event a tradition with a goal of 2,000 participants next year.
