12 Sports Athletes of the Week – Rumble Ponies are back

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — On Tuesday, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies held their media day ahead of the season beginning Thursday. As we gear up for minor league baseball in the Southern Tier, the Rumble Ponies are your 12 Sports Athletes of the Week.

This season, the Rumble Ponies have a new manager, Kevin Boles. Previously, Boles spent 11 years coaching in the Red Sox organization, and said the Mets “win now” mentality, is what he found so appealing.

“I mean they’re going for it. And there’s something to be said about being with an organization that’s going for it,” said Boles. “They could have gone two different ways. They could have gone to rebuilding, obviously you know those decisions are up top, but what Brodie’s (van Wagenen) done has been terrific. He’s going after it. And we’re going to do the best we can to make sure that we’ve got the pieces down here that hopefully they can get to Citi Field sooner than later.”

As for the Rumble Ponies roster, it features No. 1 Mets prospect Andres Gimenez. The shortstop spent time in Binghamton last season. Between Single-A and Double-A, Gimenez stole 38 bases, hit 29 doubles, 5 triples and 6 home runs. The Rumble Ponies roster also boasts pitching prospects David Peterson and Anthony Kay, the opening day starter.

“Yeah, I am excited about it,” said Kay. “You know, it should be fun to pitch against some of the best players in the minor leagues and show them what I got.”

“I love how he competes, he is aggressive in the zone to both sides of the plate, good feel for his change up and breaking ball and he is a guy that pitches with a pretty good tempo so there is a lot to like there,” said Boles. “I got to see him at major league camp, he fit right in and didn’t have any fear against major league hitters and hopefully that carries over here.”

The Rumble Ponies open their season on the road Thursday against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 6:35 p.m. The home opener in Binghamton is Thursday, April 11 at 6:35 p.m. against the Erie Seawolves.
