NANTICOKE (WBNG) — 12 News spoke with a Nanticoke woman Wednesday who says a caller claiming to be from NYSEG tried to offer her a hefty discount.
Nanus Kinney says she received a call from a man claiming to be from NYSEG.
She says he offered her 20 percent off of her electric bill and said it was a discount specifically for elderly women.
The caller then asked for information off of her electric bill to enroll her in the discount program.
“I said I am going to call NYSEG and I got a big bang when he hung up on me,” said Nanus Kinney.
12 News reached out to NYSEG to see if they knew anything about calls like these.
They told 12 News they’re aware of these calls and are NOT currently offering any kind of discount.
A NYSEG spokesperson sent a statement saying in part:
“If the caller represents that they are from NYSEG or authorized by NYSEG, they are not. NYSEG has not identified the entity or company making these calls or determined the reasons for the calls […] We strongly urge customers not to provide the caller with any personal information.”
Kinney says she hopes by speaking out, she will protect future callers, telling 12 News, “if calling you or calling the attorney general helps even one person not get caught in that, that was what it was worth.”
She says she reported the call to the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
We reached out to the attorney general’s office for more information, but have not yet heard back.
