BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Monday was Earth Day and in honor of the planet the New York State DOT was out on a trash blitz Monday morning.
Workers from every region of New York are volunteering their time to pick up litter along roads, highways and other locations.
Some of our local D-O-T workers started cleaning up our roads at 10 this morning.
Last year the blitz resulted in more than 9,000 bags of garbage collected, and this year’s crews are hoping to increase that.
It’s not just on Earth Day when DOT workers pick up trash, they do it all the time.
“Not only do we do this on earth day but our maintenance forces do this virtually everyday. Where they take care of the area, police the area, and make sure that the environment is clean.” said Dave Hamburg the Public Information Officer for the New York State DOT Region 9.
The DOT is also urging motorists to hang onto their trash while driving and to not litter, littering from the car will cause damage to the environment and can effect motorists around you.
