Kopernik breaks ground on science park

VESTAL (WBNG) — A groundbreaking ceremony on Monday celebrated a playground coming to the Kopernik Observatory and Science Center, and It’s not just any ordinary swing set and slide.

Officials said the construction on the Kopernik Science Park will begin next week. It’s something that’s been in the works for four years.

Drew Deskur, executive director of Kopernik, says the playground will be all about breaking down science, engineering, math and technology.

“What we’re trying to do is find what, in every day life, where do you find science or technology or engineering? Even in a swing you could talk about the physics behind how a swing works,” Deskur explained.

Deskur says this was an effort in part with the Junior League of Binghamton.

He says parts of the playground should be complete to play on by mid-summer.
