ENDICOTT (WBNG) — A handful of volunteers planted flowers, put down mulch and touched up dozens of plaques on Wednesday. The monuments are dedicated to men and women, from Broome County, who died while protecting the U.S.A.
“We’re paying respect to our veterans,” said Patrick Scanlon of the Western Broome Veterans Memorial Committee. “We’re not the heroes, the guys on these walls are the heroes.”
Scanlon, who has family and friends honored in the park, and other volunteers were making sure the Veterans Memorial Park Wall of Heroes is ready for a memorial service. Scanlon said it takes place around 11 a.m. on Monday, Memorial Day, after a parade.
The park has three main monuments dedicated to service members of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam.
Flags were also placed next to each plaque, which state where the veteran went to school and where they grew up. It’s located on East Main Street.
