Otsego Co. deputy’s condition improving following crash that killed suspect

ONEONTA, N.Y. (WBNG) — An Otsego County Sheriff’s deputy’s condition is improving after getting hit head-on by the car of a man who was fleeing from authorities.

The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Matthew All, died Wednesday in a head-on collision with Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy James Mateunas, who was sitting in his vehicle on Route 20 in Springfield.

In an update to media on Friday, New York State Police Troop C Captain Scott Hegglke said Mateunas is in stable condition. Mateunas had been listed in serious condition following the crash.

Hegglke says the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office had received a call before the crash that a woman was being stalked by All.

He continued to explain that All was harassing a former female co-worker, and at one point pulled a knife on the woman.

During the ordeal, troopers located All in a vehicle in Richfield Springs, Hegglke says. After speaking briefly with troopers, Hegglke notes that All sped off.

All slammed into Mateunas’ vehicle at the intersection of Route 20 and State Route 80. Hegglke says All appears to have intentionally hit Mateunas.

Hegglke also explained that All was not wearing a seat belt.
