OWEGO (WBNG) — A change is coming to the way electricity is supplied in some communities in the Southern Tier.
Owego is one of 21 communities joining a Community Choice Aggregation program. It allows MEGA or Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance to supply electric in bulk. Something Owego’s Mayor said would cost taxpayers less over time.
“It’s a flat rate so overtime it stabilized and should end up cheaper,” said Mayor Michael Baratta.
A letter sent out to residents shows the changes. That letter state taxpayers must opt out or they will be enrolled.
Officials say you will still get a bill from NYSEG, but the only change people will see would be who supplies the electricity and price.
Natural gas is not included in the change. If the power goes out people should still call NYSEG.
