Catching up with Spelling Bee finalist

BAINBRIDGE (WBNG) — 12 News caught up with Melodie Loya, the Chenango County teen who made it to the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Loya has participated in the National Spelling Bee for three years now, this year being her last because she aged-out.

She says growing up she used to watch the spelling bee on TV and that’s what got her interested in the competition.

This year, Melodie won $2,000 for making it to round seven and she says it was a lot of hard work to get there.

“I basically just studied really hard, I used words of wisdom, Sriram and Jairam’s Book, and had some eMentors,” said Loya.

Melodie says her favorite part was being able to meet new friends.
