Maine-Endwell falls in state title game

VESTAL (WBNG) – On Saturday, Maine-Endwell fell to Ballston Spa, 13-6 in the state title game. This was the first time in nine years that the Spartans were playing on championship Saturday.

M-E fell in an early hole when the Scottie’s put up a three spot in the first. The Spartans quickly answered when Adam Rutkowski’s two RBI single in the bottom of the first cut the deficit to just one.

Ballston Spa though would answer with five runs in the top of the second to take Maine-Endwell out of the game.

Despite Saturday’s loss, it was an outstanding season for Maine-Endwell. The Spartans were the only Section IV baseball team to make it both the final four and state title game.

This is the end of the road for six terrific seniors. Josh Chandler, Joe Mancini, Matt Raleigh, AJ Desantis, Rylie VanFlett and Rutkowski will all be graduating in the upcoming weeks.

“Just a great group of kids that busted their butt all year for me,” said Maine-Endwell head coach Matt Raleigh. “They bought into what we tried to do as a coaching staff and I couldn’t ask for anything more. I know today doesn’t define what they did because they had such a great year but not many teams thought we would get out of the section and give it a run right to the last day and the kids didn’t hang their heads at all today even though we were down early and I couldn’t be more proud as a coach.”

Final score:

Maine-Endwell – 6, Ballston Spa – 13
