ENDICOTT (WBNG) — The 2019 DICK’S Sporting Goods Open held its media day at En-Joie Golf Club on Monday. The first round of the PGA Tour Champions tournament begins on Friday, August 16.
Reigning winner and two-time Dick’s Open champion Bart Bryant was in town today, as he looks to become the first back-to-back winner of the tournament. Joining him in this year’s 68-player field are Chris DiMarco, Retief Goosen, Scott McCarron, Joey Sindelar, and some new faces, including David Toms and Jerry Kelly.
“We have an extremely strong field this year, and I think all the patrons are going to be happy to see some of these players that they haven’t seen before,” said Bart Bryant. “It’s going to be very competitive. It’s a credit to the buzz that’s around this tournament, because the new guys that are coming on this tour, are some of the quote, unquote top players, hall of famers. This is where they want to come, so good for you guys”
Last year, rain brought flooding to En-Joie, but Superintendent of the course Anthony Chapman said he and his team laid out hundreds of feet of new drainage throughout the holes that were problematic, and with all the rain so far this year, the new system has proved to be beneficial.
“For us, it’s all about being patient,” said Bryant. “Knowing you’re going to have a couple of rain delays, finding stuff to do, trying to stay loose and ready to play. There’s little mental games that you go through to try to keep yourself ready. Hopefully you don’t have to play lift clean and place like we did last year. I think we’re getting tired of playing lift clean and place at all of our venues. So we’re ready for some dry weather.”
