Local nonprofit organizations receive Excellus reward funding

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Five nonprofit Southern Tier organizations received reward funding from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield on Thursday morning.

The awards, totaling $17,000, focused on improving the health status of the community.

Among those awarded are the Goodwill Theatre for its healthy movement program, the United Way of Broome County for its Healthy Lifestyle Coalition After-School Enrichment program, GigGi’s Playhouse, Schuyler County Health, and the Chenango County Health Network.

“We are seeing organizations recognizing that they do play a role in the health of people, whether its the physical health or mental health,” explained Jessica Renner, regional president for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “Things like dance, things like movement, they can incorporate in their own organizations things that improve people’s lives, and if we improve people’s lives we improve their health.”

The programs chosen to win the funding were based the outreach and impact it has.

Excellus awards grants two times a year, in the spring and in the fall.
