Trooper injured in Afton traffic stop turned chase

AFTON (WBNG) — New York State Police say a trooper was injured following a traffic stop that turned into a foot chase.

State Police say a trooper attempted to stop a car traveling along County Route 41 in Afton at 6:56 p.m. Sunday for an expired inspection sticker.

They say the driver did not comply and drove away until crashing in the area of Loomis Road.

Authorities say the driver took off running on foot and when the trooper followed, the chase ended in a scuffle. They say the trooper received minor injuries to his arm and the driver of the car was bit by a police K-9.

State Police say the driver was charged with driving while impaired, criminal possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving, avoiding arrest and several traffic tickets.

Troopers also noted the driver was on parole, his name has not yet been released.
