(WBNG) — Severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon left damage it its wake across the Southern Tier.
Strong winds destroyed a gazebo in one resident’s back yard and knocked over a tree on West Avenue in Owego.
One resident said he was shocked to see the aftermath.
“I was really surprised. It just really packed a punch,” said Steve Lewis, “when I came outside, fire professionals were already getting about the same time I realized we had a downed tree. So I was like ‘wow’. I didn’t realize it was that strong.”
NYSEG crews were seen fixing power lines across Tioga county after reporting nearly 1,000 customers were without power around 3 p.m. Saturday.
Storms also traveled across the border causing dangerous conditions in New Milford, Pennsylvania.
Witnesses say the storms were brief, but they say they are grateful the damage wasn’t worse.
“It just popped up really quick. So i just made sure the animals were in and that everything was as secure as it could be. Just thankfully no one was hurt,” said Lewis.
