Police: Maryland man fatally struck as he refueled vehicle on shoulder of I-81S

NEW MILFORD, Pa. (WBNG) — Pennsylvania State Police out of Gibson responded just after 3 p.m. Monday to a crash on Interstate 81 southbound New Milford Township, Susquehanna County.

According to state police, a tractor-trailer operator went off the highway and struck a GMC vehicle that had been parked on the right-hand shoulder.

Authorities say at the time, a father and son from Bowie, Maryland were attempting to refuel their vehicle. Police say both were hit before the tractor-trailer struck the vehicle.

The father, identified as Thurinton Warren Harvel Sr., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say his son was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where he was listed in stable condition.

State police say the investigation into why the tractor-trailer left the road is ongoing.
