OXFORD, N.Y. (WBNG) — Cody Maricle, a volunteer firefighter with the Oxford Fire Department was honored in a surprise ceremony for his heroic acts.
“When you’re a volunteer, you’re always a volunteer, you do what you have to do,” said Maricle.
Maricle was presented the New York State Liberty Medal by State Senator Fred Akshar, an award Akshar says, is given to citizens who perform extraordinary acts. Maricle received the award after saving a family of five, along with their dog from a house fire.
“It’s not awarded often, and I think that speaks volumes of the award. It’s the highest honor that a member of the State Senate can bestow on a citizen that they represent,” said Akshar.
Akshar calls Maricle’s bravery, truly extraordinary.
“At the end of the day, Cody needs to be recognized and honored because he saved a family of five and their beloved dog from a house fire. Things could have ended tragically for that particular family,” said Akshar.
