KIRKWOOD (WBNG) — New York’s first ever industrial hemp park is growing its roots in Broome County.
Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth unveiled its $150 million dollar facility in Kirkwood Monday.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) said it will bring at least 400 new jobs to the area and put Broome County at the forefront of the rapidly rising hemp industry.
“The potential here is just enormous and it is so good that Binghamton, Broome County, Kirkwood and the Southern Tier are the center of all of this,” said Sen. Schumer.
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said the new job opportunities will help young people stay in Broome County.
“Really cool companies like Canopy are one of the ways we’re going to attract young people,” said Garnar.
Canopy Growth President Rade Kovacevic said the company choose Broome County for its strong-skilled workforce, manufacturing infrastructure and agricultural infrastructure.
