DEC cleans up 100 gallons of diesel after Kirkwood tractor-trailer crash

2:30 P.M. UPDATE:

KIRKWOOD (WBNG) — The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:30 a.m. Friday to a crash involving two tractor-trailers on Interstate 81 northbound between exits 3 and 4.

According to the sheriff’s office, an investigation found that a tractor-trailer traveling north became disabled and was stopped on the east shoulder of the highway, out of traffic.

Minutes later, authorities say the driver of another tractor-trailer, also traveling north, failed to maintain the lane and drove onto the shoulder and hit the first tractor-trailer.

Deputies say the crash resulted in the rupturing of diesel fuel tanks from both trucks, spilling over 100 gallons of diesel onto the roadway, shoulder and dirt embankment.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response arrived at the scene to facilitate the cleanup of the diesel fuel. The highway was closed from the arrival of first responders until 4:50 a.m. and then the right lane was closed until 9:15 a.m.

The sheriff’s office says the operator of the disabled truck suffered back injuries and a passenger in the second truck sustained head and leg injuries. Both were transported to Wilson Hospital. Both trucks and trailers were towed from the scene.

Officials say the operator of the second truck was issued a traffic citation for moved from lane unsafely, returnable to the Town of Kirkwood Court at a later date.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office says it was assisted on scene by the Five-Mile Point Fire Department, Kirkwood Fire Department, City of Binghamton Fire Department, NYSDOT and NYSDEC Spill Response.
