BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — As the new school year rapidly approaches, many young students across the Southern Tier are in dire need of backpacks, as well as other school supplies.
Thanks to our local sponsors, the 6th annual WBNG Backpack Drive is one of the biggest drives we’ve ever had with more locations than ever to drop off a new backpack.
Patrick Scannell, an Orthodontist at Hatala Orthodontics, says seeing the smiles on the young students faces makes participating in this drive well worth it.
“The biggest part of our practice here is we see kids all day everyday. This time of year especially, we see them excited to get back to school, a little nervous going to a new grade, or sometimes a new school,” Scannell noted. “So, seeing that, how big it can be to have a new backpack or just something less to worry about to make it easier for them on day one.”
Scannell also mentioned that if you can’t make it out to any of the drop off locations, you can actually order a backpack online and ship it to Hatala Orthodontics at 165 Riverside Drive in Johnson City, and they will add that to the collection.
“We’ve had people call the office and ask us how they can send us things because they’re not able to drive here too. So, it’s been huge support year after year. We wouldn’t be able to keep doing it if we didn’t have people continuing to come back. Some people bring a handful every single year,” added Scannell.
