Southern Tier Tuesdays: Community Meals

We are continuing our Southern Tier Tuesdays campaign and today’s recipient of Upstate Shredding’s $2,000 grant is Community Meals by Saint Michael’s Russian-Carpatho Orthodox Church.

The Community Meal is offered each Monday at 6 p.m. with the doors open at 5:30. The program offers a full course meal including soup, salad and desert as well as food giveaways that take place later in the evening. On the fourth Sunday of every month Lourdes Hospital brings medical staff to the meal to provide free treatment.

The idea was the idea of coordinator Barbara Knighton who said the program evolved from a breakfast and lunch program that was offered to students who were in need of meals over summer break. “I realized then that there was a much greater need. There’s such a large amount of food insecurity and there was a greater need than just the summer program,” Knighton said. The program grew from being offered twice a month, to every Monday.

While much of the food is donated, Knighton said that the $2,000 grant will be used to supplement those donations and cover out of pocket costs

Community Meals is offered every Monday at 6 p.m. and serves upwards of 200 people weekly. Saint Michael’s is located at 296 Clinton St in Binghamton.
