JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — Bill’s Barber Shop has a new employee, and he is proving how utilizing local programs to help find jobs can start a new future.
Manaf Mohammed is originally from Kurdistan, Iraq and when he came to the United States, he had a dream that he would one day begin his own career.
Well, with clippers in hand, Mohammed is now ready to style anyone’s hair at Bill’s Barber Shop. The owner, Bill Jeavons himself, says this is one of the first times he has had a full-time assistant at his business.
“I had an opportunity at one time so I figured let’s give someone else an opportunity,” said Jeavons.
Mohammed got his barber license through Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES. He says the Broome-Tioga Workforce helped him on his job search.
“They helped me a lot” said Mohammed. “Been working here three weeks with Bill and I’m so happy.”
Jeavons and Mohammed stand side by side at the shop, their hands swiftly styling hair in syncopated motions, showing how the two work well together.
“He’s very reliable, very courteous, good manners, comes to work on time,” said Jeavons about Manaf. “I foresee him owning his own shop one day.”
Bill’s Barber Shop is located at 259 Floral Avenue in Johnson City and has been open since 1969.
