Binghamton University professor wins Nobel Prize in Chemistry

VESTAL (WBNG) — M. Stanley Whittingham, a professor of chemistry and materials science at Binghamton University, was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the lithium-ion battery.

Binghamton University says Whittingham played a key role in the development of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is commonly used in cell phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices.

“We hoped it would grow, but we never envisioned it going this far,” said Professor Whittingham while video-chatting with Binghamton University from Germany Wednesday night.

He came to Binghamton University in 1988, after spending 16 years with Exxon Research and Engineering Company.

Whittingham has had more than 200 publications in scholarly journals, as well as 16 patents, including the rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Meanwhile, BU President Harvey Stenger says this recognition will only help the university, saying, “I do think this could grow even bigger if we can manage it properly. We still do a tremendous amount of battery research here, the field of energy storage, and the concept of sustainability is one of the key future aspects of student interest.”

Whittingham worked extensively with other scientists, including John B. Goodenough and Akira Yoshino from the University of Texas at Austin, to develop the battery.

The three winners will share a prize of over $900,000.
