Broome County opens brand new disc golf course

COLESVILLE (WBNG) — The newest sport to come to Broome County has enthusiasts very excited to have a different way to enjoy the outdoors.

At Nathaniel Cole Park Wednesday, Broome County officials announced the creation of a disc golf course, the first of its kind in our area.

Disc golf is played almost identically to the much more well known version of golf with a ball and club.

The course is absolutely massive, featuring 18 holes and all of the twists and turns you’d normally find on a golf course. Instead of golf balls, you use flying discs that weigh a little under half a pound, and instead of holes in the ground there are hanging baskets.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said with new activities like this one come new opportunities.

“None of our parks have ever had anything like this and we’re trying to have more events and activities like this in our parks,” Garnar said. “In getting to know the disc golf club association, this is a very popular sport, really brings people out. You can come out here, you can get exercise, have a lot of fun.”

There’s even more similarities between the new sport and golf, as there are pars and bogeys and the lowest score at the end of the day wins.

The course still needs a little beautification, and officials are hoping the course will be fully open by early next year.
