CLOSE CALL: Sheriff’s Office says driver went wrong way on Interstate 81, nearly hits deputy

KIRKWOOD (WBNG) — The Broome County Sheriff’s Office says a Windsor woman was charged with driving while intoxicated over the weekend, after she was seen driving the wrong way on Interstate 81 southbound and nearly crashed into a deputy vehicle.

Deputy Derek Linebaugh was driving south on Interstate 81 in the Town of Kirkwood around 10 p.m Saturday, when he saw a driver heading north in the left lane.

The sheriff’s office says Linebaugh swerved to avoid crashing into the suspect vehicle, which then turned around to start driving the right direction.

The deputy carried out a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, which hit a guide rail while pulling over.

They say the driver showed signs of impairment, and after a standardized field sobriety test was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated. The suspect was taken to the BCSO where she gave a breath sample of .15% BAC.

The suspect was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor and multiple vehicle and traffic violations. She was released with several traffic summons for the Town of Kirkwood Court.
