Vestal Fire Prevention Officer retiring after nearly two decades

VESTAL (WBNG) — Vestal Fire Safety Prevention Officer Ken Fortier has been teaching kids how to stay safe during a fire for 19 years, working at the Vestal Fire Department for 23 years.

Monday was his last program at the Vestal Fire Department with kids from Clayton Avenue Elementary School.

“When I was a brand new firefighter I think it was only two years in and we were on standby for another fire company and the little boy doesn’t get out of the house and I walked out and I walked to my car and I said there’s more we can do than just be a firefighter,” said Fortier.

He’ll be moving to Florida after being in Broome County all his life.
