(WBNG) — New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation Tuesday requiring death certificates to specify which opioid was involved in deaths caused by opioids.
The law is intended to track opioid deaths in New York State by specifying which opiate was responsible for killing the deceased, Cuomo’s office says.
“New York has taken the most aggressive actions to combat the opioid crisis of any other state in the country,” Cuomo said in an official press release
“This commonsense law will go a great length to ensure we have the most accurate information to be able to stop this public health scourge once and for all,” he said.
This legislation takes effect immediately.
