ENDICOTT (WBNG) — Before firearm hunting season opens in New York, here are some tips you need to know.
The owner of Timbercreek Firearms in Endicott says the most important rule when it comes to handling firearms is to keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
Also important is to always check your safety and if it’s a new firearm, take it to a range to get familiar with it.
Lastly, there are certain precautions you should take while loading it.
“You want to be careful, especially if you’re loading or unloading your gun, a lot of guys will unload just as they get ready to leave the woods or some people will wait til they get to their vehicle, but always point the muzzle toward the ground or a safe area where there’s no one there,” said Chuck Sherwood, who has been an avid hunter all his life.
For deer specifically, firearm season begins on Saturday, November 16th and lasts until December 8th, with another week of bow hunting open after that.
