Community comes together to support local woman with Lyme Disease

GREENE (WBNG) –  A community is raising money for Tia Franklin, a local woman battling Lyme Disease. Over 300 people attended Saturday night’s ‘Pasta with a Purpose’ benefit.

Franklin was officially diagnosed in September and hasn’t been able to continue to work as a hairdresser at Studio Soho Salon due to her symptoms. As medical costs are beginning to take a toll on the family, Franklin’s aunt decided to host a benefit.

“Tia is my niece and her sister and I were talking about wanting to do something special because she is a wonderful person,” Heather Montgomery said.

At first, Franklin says she was reluctant to agree to the fundraiser.

“I was actually hesitant because I didn’t know if we deserved it,” Franklin said. “I never imagined so many people would come out to support our family but it just shows what a small community can do.”

Montgomery said it took just a month to organize the event which featured over 110 raffle baskets and a 50/50 auction.

“There was this outpouring of donations so we got all of the food donated to us,” Montgomery said.
