A “tail” of survival: dog found with leg reduced to a stump

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WBNG) — Zoe, a nine-year-old dog, was found chained outside with her leg looking like it had been what witnesses described as “blown off.”

After being rescued by emergency services, Zoe was taken for medical analysis. After running blood tests and conducting x-rays, medical professionals diagnosed her with a heart murmur and anemia. Additional tests show she possibly has a tumor, and even bone cancer.

To top it all off, they say they found bones inside her stomach, which led experts to believe she had gnawed off a large portion of her leg.

“It’s very possible that she was in so much pain from the bone cancer or the cancer in her arm, that she gnawed it off to get rid of the pain,” said Stacie Haynes with the Susquehanna SPCA.

Her leg was actually not blown off as it was first believed to be, but gnawed off. The SPCA says the fact that Zoe ate her own leg shows how desperate she was to survive. Now, she is undergoing more tests at Cornell University, but her spirits are high.

“A dog in this condition, you would think she would be growling and snarling, but she’s not. She’s happy to be pet, she gets up, she wants to walk,” said Haynes.

Right now, the SPCA hopes to improve Zoe’s quality of life in the short term.

“The long term is still a really big question mark right now,” said Haynes.

Zoe has been surrendered to the SPCA by her previous owners. It is unclear if they will face any charges.
