CANDOR (WBNG) — First graders at Candor Elementary School are looking for help with a fun project. As part of their geography unit students are collecting postcards from all 50 states.
“We do this project because we want them to know where they are in the world, where’s their place in the world,” said first grade teacher Joy Rockwell-Joyce.
The postcard project has been a fixture of the first grade curriculum at Candor Elementary for more than twenty years.
“They come from family members, friends, people we don’t even know will send them,” said first grade teacher Mary Harris.
It used to take months to fill in the map, but Harris says the power of social media has expanded the possibilities.
“Now with social media we just plug it into Facebook and it goes viral really fast so there are people that give us postcards from all over the world,” Harris said.
At the same time teaching students how to receive mail the old-fashioned way.
“It’s really nice for them to learn how to get mail, see them getting mail and seeing how they’re addressed and learning really things they’re going to need as adults,” said first grade teacher Kerra Schermerhorn.
Not only giving students a better sense of where they are, but also a better connection with their relatives across the country.
“Sometimes the children don’t realize there’s a world outside of Candor so they get so excited when they see a map and they say ‘oh my god I have a family member there,'” said first grade special education teacher Kelly Murphy.
A unique lesson plan that gets students learning while at the same time having fun doing it.
“Some times the students get a postcard and they don’t realize where that state is so they’re like “they live really far or they live really close’ so they’re making those connections,” said Harris.
