JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — Local diners, Village Diner and Skylark Diner, were both ranked as some of the best in upstate New York. Newyorkupstate.com compiled a list of the 35 best diners and collected the data from Yelp.com.
The small, 42-seat Village Diner, took second place on the list. On Wednesday, the owner, Kevin Hayes, said it’s the community that keeps them strong. With only nine employees, including Hayes himself, he said Village Diner is special.
“The people that work here are so genuine and we offer a great atmosphere along with the food and I feel like that’s a great formula for any business,” Hayes said.
Hayes said their community pride is strong and the staff makes his diner stand out.
“We play our local radio station, we use local products and I employ 9 local people,” Hayes said. “We’re a small 42-seat diner and we’ve been in the community and that’s just what it’s all about.”
Village Diner said they are a friendly and open environment, welcoming all. Hayes said their homemade food keeps customers coming back with specials that aren’t typically seen in other diners. He said he hopes Village Diner can keep customers smiling.
“My goal is to continue what we’re doing, to be known as a place of quality, both in customer experience and in food and just being part of the local community and the food scene that’s growing,” he said.
Before Hayes became the owner of Village Diner about a year ago, he was also a customer. Now, he has a special message for them.
“Thank you so much for all the love you showed me in the last year and we just love being part of this community,” Hayes said.
