CONKLIN (WBNG) — Susquehanna Valley football is ready to take the stage in the Class C state title game Friday night.
Last season, the Sabers won the program’s first state title with a 27-6 victory over Dobbs Ferry. This year’s opponent will be an undefeated Gouverneur team from Section Ten. The Wildcats will be playing in their first state title game.
“They’re a run-oriented team. They do pass but they prefer to do jet sweeps, quarterback keepers. their quarterback is very shifty, he’s what their offense really goes through. Defensively they run a three-four, which we haven’t seen much of this year, but that has been our focus this week is to work on that. Other than that they’re a good team, they play well together and it should be a good game,” said SV head coach Mike Ford.
Susquehanna Valley enters this game undefeated, riding a 25-game win streak- the longest active streak in New York state. The Sabers sat on top of Class C for the entirety of the season, putting up 551 points over their opponents. Despite losing 18 seniors from the 2018 state championship. Susquehanna Valley has dominated this season, and are confident they can go back-to-back.
“They’re disciplined, they believe in what we’re doing, and they just stepped into those shoes, it’s a really good team. They don’t care who gets the credit, they just want to do their job,” said coach Ford.
“We’ve all been pushing, we had some doubters out there, so proving everyone wrong that we could do it even though we lost so many people,” said junior Logan Haskell.
“We knew it was possible if we worked hard, everyone did their job if we could get back, it would be amazing to go back to back, win two,” said junior Patrick Cooper.
Friday night’s game kicks off from the Carrier Dome in Syracuse at 6 p.m.
