BINGHAMTON (WBNG) - NYSEG says the Southern Tier was one of the hardest hit areas in New York State during Monday's snow storm.
Broome County Emergency Services is reminding the community of important safety protocols.
"You should consider any wire that's down on the ground as an electrical wire," said Fire Coordinator Jeffrey Buckler. "Don't assume anything else."
Buckler said when you see downed power lines, you should stay away and alert authorities. He warns that lines can be especially dangerous when the ground is wet, covered in ice or snow.
Inside your home, Buckler said all major appliances should be shut off.
"If you seek alternative power, such as a portable generator, make sure you are using that outside of your house or your garage, in a well ventilated area away from any air intakes," Buckler said.
Emergency Services also advises keeping an emergency kit inside the home in preparation for the next big storm.
