TOWN OF DICKINSON (WBNG) - The snow and slush can make for some dangerous road conditions, which is why Sherrif's Deputies wants you to be prepared in case you get into a crash.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office says to always be prepared. Make sure you have plenty of gas in the car and your tires have the right amount of air before you drive in the snow.

If you car spins out of the road or crashes, deputies say the most important thing to do is to stay in your car.

"Other cars are also sliding in the ice or in the snow. And if you are outside of your car, it's a very dangerous place for you to be. So stay in your car and call 9-1-1 and tell them as much information as possible," said Captain Kate Newcomb from the Broome County Sheriff's Department.

If you do find yourself in an crash and can't call 9-1-1 because of bad service or low battery, deputies say find a way to make yourself noticed in order to get help.

"Well there's a few things that you can do. Number one you want to make yourself visible to any passersby or any rescuers who might be coming along. That could be taking a piece of bright colored clothing and hanging outside your window. If there's a lot of snow... you should ensure that your exhaust pipe is not covered," said Newcomb.

Officials also urge you to stay inside your vehicle, conserve gas, and also cover yourself with a blanket to stay warm.
