Broome County Sheriff’s Office shares what to do when traffic lights go dark

What to do when traffic lights go dark

BROOME COUNTY (WBNG) -- When the power goes out the Broome County Sheriff's Office says you should pay close attention at intersections.

After winter weather caused recent power outages the Sheriff's Office is educating people about what to do when a stop light is out.

Deputies say it can make for a pretty dangerous situation and you should always err on the side of caution.

"If you find yourself at a traffic signal that's not working you should treat it as a four way stop," said Sheriff's Deputy Robert Stapleton. "Now there's a lot of other motorists that might continue to go through but err on the side of caution and stop and then once its safe to proceed go through."
